Vicious Circle

There’s a 20th birthday celebration going down at Club Splurt, Chardon’s Corner this weekend… and it’s not some piss-up for a young wallet-chain-wearing ‘punk’.

No, this party’s in honour of Melbourne hardcore band Vicious Circle, who first hit the scene back in 1983.

As vocalist Paul remembers, it was a special moment.

“We played at the Seaview Ballroom in St Kilda,” Paul says. “Just knowing we were playing on the same stage that bands like Iggy Pop, The Saints, Dead Kennedy's and Depression had played on was pretty incredible.”

So how much has the band changed since those early days?

“I was 14 when we started and was pretty belligerent. Life teaches you things. As far as songwriting goes… if you compare [1985’s] Price Of Progress to our newest album, Switched On, the evolution in the songwriting is pretty evident but it still has that V.C. thing about it.”

And what does Paul think about all these bands that go around calling themselves ‘punk’ these days?

“When I was growing up in the western suburbs of Melbourne being a punk rocker was pretty dangerous. I had my nose pierced, which my ten-year-old sister did, and I had a bright green mohawk about six inches long. I got the shit kicked out of me a few times and ended up shaving my head. I always wore flanny shirts, Doc boots and Yakka baggies with a heavily studded belt for protection.

“Being a punker at that time meant commitment, a lot of people had really fucked attitudes. As for what passes for punk these days, some of it isn’t worth a pinch of shit! I mean, how many times can you hear ‘my girl broke my heart’ in a song? … Being in Vicious Circle isn’t a job – it’s a love affair in a mental ward and I’ll never get out.”
