Geoff Sick R.I.P. Sadly we farewell the legend of the Melbourne Punk scene. 05 May 2007 REMEMBERING GEOFF Click this for - Memories By Gary Sick Click this for - Memories By Dave Spasm Click this for - Memories By Paul Waste
The first time I met Geoff was in the year 1980. I had just left school and was working at a rehearsal room in Preston. Letting in the bands and getting spare leads and mics for them and stuff, I guess you know the drill. I hadn't been there that long and one day these bunch of really outrageous people came in to hire a room. All dressed in scruffy clothes with messy hair, they took there room and proceeded to make a bunch of noise that I thought was outa this world. Ya see the only Punk music I had ever heard was The Sex Pistols and The Clash. As it happened these guys were short 1 drummer. Also as luck had it there were no other bands in at the time so kindly and fearfully I offered my services as a drummer. These guys were all older than me and very fluent in the art of drug taking. I set up the drum kit, locked the front door, put the answering machine on and The Sick Things were born. Dugald the singer just stood in the one spot screaming his guts out in between smoking ciggies and bongs and drinkin cyder. Mick the guitarist had a way of making his guitar scream like nothin I had ever heard before. And Geoff, well Geoff was one of the most powerful people I had ever met. Pluckin that bass guitar like there was no tomorrow in between drinkin beer and spittin somethin out the side of his mouth. Geoff as I understand it had been a part of the music scene for quite a while and had played in or had something to do with lots of other bands. Geoff wasn't just a bass player or a hardcore punk, he was hardcore punk. Never letting up for nothing. If it was worth doing in Geoff's eyes then it was worth overdoing, just for the fun of it. His bungalow that he lived in was covered with every album and tape and cd and poster from just about everywhere. Geoff lived for Punk music. Some of the bands that we came in contact with over the time when I was with them were all about appearance, but not Geoff. To Geoff it was about the music and that's the fuckin way it should be. There are more people around who know a lot more of the contributions that he made to the Melbourne hardcore music scene, but I'm just sharing what I saw. I lived with the guy, we used to share a house in Caulfield Melbourne, and Geoff was always playin his bass to cds all night long. He never stood for anybody else's views, he had his own. For those of you that actually got to have a beer with the bloke, count it a blessing because people like Geoff only come around every once in a while.. Anyway that's all I've got to say .. Geoff Martyr you are sadly missed and your contribution to Australian Hardcore Punk Music will be remembered for a very very long time.. cheers mate and PEACE to ya.. Gaz
There is a whole lot of memories that go along with this bloke. I first met Geoff at a Legend Killers rehearsal in Simmo's garage in East Malvern. Being from Canberra Geoff didn't seem to fussed about me being there, he had that who the fuck are you about him. Anyway as they rehearsed and more beer was consumed, the Idea came up to go out to a gig, every one but Geoff and myself had to go for their nightly nana nap and wouldn't go, thus leaving a none to pleased Geoff to baby sit me for the night. We went to the gig stopping for beers along the way at various pubs. Gradually getting to know each other a bit better with every beer. This night out was the start of what could only be an everlasting "Mate ship". Needless to say by the end of the night we were to become the best of mates.... Many a beer was drunk and Jimmy Beams on my various sorties to Melbourne just to hang out with Geoff and see his band the Legend Killers. We used to call each other at least once a night, depending on the beer consumption. Geoff made a few treks to Canberra. One memorable jaunt he and Trusy were kicked out of a place in Fyshwick (need I Say more) We formed a make believe band called "Buckark" and rang Jacquie from Nomad records and said we were from Finland. She said send a demo so we recorded one with pots and pans for drums and stupid shit like that. the only lyrics being BUCKARK...... There was the time I went to America and all he wanted was a t shirt of GWAR. I must of went to every shop in the states looking for the right one but I found it. Geoff lived and breathed punk rock and hardcore, his knowledge was unbelievable. With Geoff's passing Australia losses one of its punk rock legends a real champion. One of the funniest blokes I have ever meet, never a dull moment. If you didn't know Geoff, sadly you never will. Geoff was our band the Bladder Spasms from Canberra's greatest fan ,we played in Melbourne recently and dedicated our set to him ,as we did in Canberra when we supported D.O.A one of his favourite bands. Geoff is gone but NEVER forgotten by us ......R.I.P GEOFF "SICK" MARTYR...........Dave Spasm
My Mate Geoff It’s been a while since my friend Geoff Martyr passed away, and over the past six months I’ve had time to reflect on our friendship. I met Geoff through the punk scene here in Melbourne during the late 80’s. When I first met him he was a tough, knock about bloke, that didn’t take crap from anybody, he played the meanest bass guitar you ever heard, he had a great love for late 70’s/early 80’s punk music, mainly bands from England, The Buzzcocks, The Damned, Exploited, Sham69, Motorhead etc.. He always seemed to play in two or three bands at the same time, while frequenting the Prince of Wales Hotel in St Kilda I always noticed he was there on a Thursday night playing in one of his bands. Geoff and I became friends through seeing each other at gigs and saying hello, sharing a few bourbons and talking about music and the local scene that we both loved. One of his bands which name I cannot remember did a cover of a Husker Du’ song called “The girl who lived on heavens hill” which was a real favourite of mine at the time and I remember thinking just how cool it was to hear that song live and to see Geoff and his mates playing it. Around 1988 the band that I played in ‘Extremes’ folded, and I founded a new band called “Legend Killers” with our old drummer ‘Simmo’ and a new singer from the scene, Mick Francis, I vividly remember asking Geoff if he would like to jam with us at band rehearsal, well, Geoff rocked up, learnt a few songs that really impressed us, and we immediately asked him to join the fold.
Legend Killers was more a Punk/Metal crossover band that sounded a lot like Poison Idea, DRI, Agnostic Front, Depression etc type of thing, that had a lot of aggression to its sound, and at the time was a real improvement to what we all did in the past. I was really impressed by Geoff’s attitude to playing a much heavier style of music and not playing the same old punk riffs that we were used to hearing. Geoff and I spent alot of time together jamming and writing material for the band thus forming a great friendship, he taught me a lot about music and to not hold anything back and make the music sharp and to the point without wasting anytime, he even helped me out with employment at a clothing wholesaler in Collingwood where he was warehouse manager and man did we ever get up to no good, he didn’t really like his employers that much and he had a nick name for them “The Matheads”. One fond memory from those days was going to the Baden Powell Hotel after work and having many drinks and talking about everything and everyone, we were so fond of that pub we even put on shows there, the barmaids said we could just about drink anyone under the table with our triple bourbon and cokes and man did I leave that place blind as, regularly. One night I remember sitting there with Geoff and Tim Hemensley and being blown away by their stories and hearing about their great love for music, Tim always said that Geoff was a huge influence. Tim and I once had a lead guitar competition at the “Duke of Edinburgh” in St Kilda in our early days which was a riot, cause I was never the best lead player and we had many a laugh remembering that night. Geoff was a top promoter too, he organised gigs at the Bendigo Hotel in Johnson St Collingwood and they were always a top night, he gave every band a fair go and they always got paid even if five people turned up. He lived with Borgy just around the corner in and old run down printing factory that they made into a party house / band rehearsal joint that was nothing short of frightening. Legend Killers in my opinion was Geoff’s finest hour, he poured his heart and soul into the band and wrote some of the heaviest songs in his career, his bass playing was amazing and we really did some of our best gigs ever during this time, the live at the Sarah Sands DVD is a testament to that and hopefully will be made available for sale through the regression website. Geoff was always a fun guy to be around and was very quick witted and opinionated, one time when we were guests on 3PBS-FM he blasted the local punk scene for being slack and lazy, I laughed my ass off big time it was so cool. I got to know Geoff’s family too and was privileged to go see then every once in a while and have a great yack with him while swapping wrestling videos and music tapes for our collections. As time went on Legend Killers folded after many line up changes and our friendship faded somewhat to the point where we went our separate ways and didn’t communicate much at all. I didn’t see Geoff that much after the band folded but still kept in contact now and again with my old buddy to see how he was. Geoff always sent me a Christmas card and as of a few years ago we started writing to each other again a few times a year, he spoke about caring for his mum, and his record collection that was his pride and joy and other things. Geoff Martyr was and will always be a true legend of the Australian punk music scene, his style, music and attitude will never be forgotten, he had a heart of gold and cared for those who cared about him. I was truly blessed to have such a great friend in my life and deeply saddened that he is not with us today. Thanks Geoff for all your love, support, and encouragement. Your mate always Paul Waste
