"Melbourne Punk Directory" Concept and original words by Hungry Dave (March 2005)
Part 7: 1995 to 1997 This, the final chapter of the MPD, deals with bands that existed during the period of 1995 to 1997. By this stage there were more punk bands than you could poke a stick at. Most of the bands from this era played a melodic power pop style being pretty much influenced by Californian bands like the Descendents etc. But.. there was also a few Hardcore, Crust, Brit-punk and post punk bands on the scene. In the “old days” the idea was you took the influences and did your own thing with it (such as the 1982-1984 era bands did) however by this stage that idea was a bit lost on some bands who sounded a bit too samey wanting to sound like Bad religion, Descendents or whatever. Still, there was some great and good bands none the less. __________________________________________________________________________________ Featured Bands...so far... Click on the band name or scroll down for the full history. A.S.V.V., Beanflipper, Bodyjar, Buzzbomb, Caustic Soda, Cretins Puddle, Devotchka, Fallout, Farenheit 451, 4Q, Gameover, H-Block, Headcase, Kill, Kurgan, Magnacite, Mindsnare, Mid Youth Crisis, Mutiny, Myside, Next Step, Nasty Pasties, No Grace, Nursery Crimes (Cont), No Idea, Nihilistic View, Oddball, One Inch Punch, Poncho Estrada, Scroungers, Self Reliance, Silpheed, Smut, Sphyzein, Stand Against, Trigger, Vicious Circle, Warsore, Wrongbody, Walsh Street Cop Killers __________________________________________________________________________________ Oi/Bogan band that had indecipherable original songs such as “knife wound” but entertaining none the less.
Grind/Crust band that developed out of Warp Spasm. Influences ranged from Crass to Vicious Circle to Damaged. The Band released Total Dysfunctional Collapse Rodent Ulcer EP Garden Variety Manic Depressant Beanflipper broke up in 1998 and then reformed in 2004 for
a couple of years. Some words from Matti Harrod I'm the drummer for Beanflipper but I
was also the drummer for "Mental
Health", "Mullgrinder" and "Hardcore Pusles". So as you see
Craig was
not the only one who went off to do other things. (Thanks for the info)
Probably the most premier Aussie pop-punk band of the 1990’s. Influenced by the Descendents/All. Also comparisons were made with Millencollin and No Fun At all. Lots of releases, O/S tours etc. This band got active in 1994 and later evolved into Voice of Dissent. No other info known.
Descendents/Emo core type band which later evolved into Blueline Medic.
Blink/NOFX band that did the awful “Electric Dreams” cover. Melodic punk band who released an EP titled “Bucket o’Puss to go Mr President”. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Some words from Morgan from the band. (2006) Thanks. I was the bass player and one of the singers in Devotchka and I can tell you a bit more about it. The original lineup was Mark-Guitar , Morgan-Bass/Vocals , Steve - Drums/Vocals. The band started in 93 and after a couple of years we also picked up a 2nd guitarist 'Chris'. Steve eventually quit the band after the EP release to pursue a career as an insurance salesman (no shit) and have a normal life. He was replaced by Luke, a talented but drug addled freak who descended into a heroin vortex as far as I know. Mark went on to form 'Kill' as you've mentioned. Chris took his own life a couple of years ago after the end of a long term relationship, kinda sad coz he was a talented bastard too. I'm now a professional stunt actor. Twas cool to
read your page, I remember most of the bands in the 95-97 era quite well, played
with a few of them. You haven't mentioned any of the seminal venues for
Melbourne punk like the GB, Tote, Arthouse etc. Marie is
still running punk at the Arthouse and remembers me and the band from the
distant past. That place is a frickin institution. Cheers mate, Melton band influenced by Madball, Agnostic Front, Drop Dead and Metal. This was a young band from Melton that played a U.S. Emo-core. Loud raging British 1980’s style hardcore band, similar to Bastard Squad, Oi Pollio, Broken Bones and English Dogs. Formed in 1996. Musically along the same lines as Descendents, Lagwagon, NOFX, Bad Religion etc.
Influenced by English 1977 punk such as The Clash, The Jam and 999.
Humorous hardcore band. This band was influenced by The Marc Of Cain, Misfits and Shellac. Kill featured ex- Kaos, Devotchka and Christbait members. This band played melodic Metal-ish Hardcore. Nasty hardcore band with Growly vocals.
Fast Metalish N.Y. hardcore style band with influences like Agnostic Front, Madball and Youth of Today.
Irish/Folk/punk act, something different. No info known. Used to play on the same bill as Mindsnare etc. Some words from Steve Weir a founding member. (2005) I was in a band around that time that
played a lot of shows in Melbourne with bands like, Oddball, Seeling, H-Block,
Game Over. We were called Nasty Pasties. Another NOFX, Descendents type band. A Melton band. Played a similar style to
Fallout. Influenced by N.Y. hardcore. Appeared in 1996. A cr0ss between 1977 punk and chaos punk. Still doing it. Make sure you catch one of their shows, top band. A 1980’s Exploited style band hat played heavy, fast hardcore with the Anti-system type ideas and lyrics. The band was still going through this period. Thanks to Alex "Bastard Squad" for the info.... OddBall - This was an angry melodic punk band I started with another bloke from Trevor (not Trigger). Influenced by Bad Religion etc. We put out a 9 track EP called 'Laundromat' on the Rapido label and recorded a 5 track EP which appeared on the Care Factor Records compilation 'This Is Punk o' Clock Too'. This group disbanded and formed Poncho Estrada with ex OddBall, No Idea and Nasty Pasties. One Inch Punch / Mid Youth Crisis
Like Mindsnare these guys played fast hardcore and were considered one of the better bands of the day. Musically in between Minor threat / D.C. punk and early Bad Religion. Soon after
Oddball and
Nastie Pasties
splitting Alex, Chris and Step from Oddball and Roger from No Idea hooked up
with Steve from Nastie Pasties
and started Poncho Estrada. A one man band featuring a guy called Macca that played all the instruments himself. Macca has been in other bands previous to this such as Two Years Old and Silent Lunatics. March 2009 - Clinton Green has just released
The Scroungers - Bored, Pissed & Agro: 1991-1997
Available now for free download or on CDR - www.shamefilemusic.com U.S. hardcore influenced band that later evolved into 28 days. Western suburbs band that played melodic punk. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some words from Chris who played in Silpheed. (2006)
We (Silpheed)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Crusty or 1977 style punk? No info known please contact us if you can help.
Past punk type band influenced by The Marc Of Cain, Shellac and Fugazi. Crusty Anarchist band that played noisy hardcore thrash. Trevor was Alex (guitar +vocals), Craig (guitar + vocals), Rae (bass) and Mick (drums). Alex went on to form Oddball. Melodic punk band i.e.: NOFX, Descendents etc Reformed in 1995 with Les and Paul being the only original members.
Noise-core / Grind / Crust band influenced by Swedish and Japanese hardcore.
Watercow
Played together for 2-3 years with supports show with Face To Face, and many Melbourne bands during that time. Then Mark the American Import received a full scholarship to Melbourne Uni Music in classical guitar and orchestral composing therefore allowing little time for band stuff. Apparently from Ballarat. No other info know. Please let us know if you can help. Thinking / aware band that played in a Helment-ish U.S. hardcore style. Still going at this stage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Concept and original words by Hungry Dave (May 2004 - March 2005) "Melbourne Punk Directory" Main Index Page Part 1: 1977 to 1979 "In The Begining" Part 2: 1980 to 1981 "Second Wave" Part 3: 1982 to 1984 "Hardcore" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
