"Melbourne Punk Directory" Concept and original words by Hungry Dave (March 2005) Part 6: 1991 to 1994 The early 1990’s punk had picked up quite a bit. In the late 1980’s there was a feeling that punk had sort of lost it’s identity and had degenerated into thrash/metal with only bands like “Bastard Squad” flying the flag for true punk with an anti-system attitude and something to say. This was the era when Manic Ideas started. This was the brainchild of Rae and her then partner John. During their years of operation they changed the face of All Ages Shows in Melbourne. The Corner Hotel was packed on a monthly Saturday afternoon with around 700-800 punters seeing some of the great bands around in the early nineties. On any given weekend you could see, The Hard Ons, Cosmic Psychos, The Meanies, Nursery Crimes, Spiderbait, No Comply, Rootbeer, Damnation the list was endless. Their shows were inexpensive and the punters got a full on arvos entertainment. Manic Ideas later joined forces with The Push Foundation to then go on and produce the “Push Over Shows” which attracted up to 15,000 people on the day. __________________________________________________________________________________ Featured Bands...so far... Click on the band name or scroll down for the full history. Aqua Nuggets, Beanfeast, Bone Crusher, Butt Ugly, Damnation, Dweebs, Forcefed, Forgotten Generation, Fridge, Growing Concern, Helium, Labotomie Scars, Mouth, No Comply, Poppin Mammas, Providence, Seaweed Gorillas, Snark, Steadfast, Sourpuss, Subzero, The Affected, Tucknot, Two Years Old, Unclean Spirits, Walsh Street Cop Killers, Zambian Goatherders __________________________________________________________________________________ By 1991/92 there was shit loads of bands, gigs and tons of all ages gigs which gave rise to a healthy outer suburbs scenes such as Croydon, Eastern suburbs etc.. Without trying to generalise too much there was at least “3” different types of punk bands around this time. 1/. The Meanies / Nursery Crymes type of punk which was a melodic pop punk style and pretty popular in pubs and all ages gigs. 2/. A more “Rock and Roll” style of punk which was played by bands like Bored!, Poppin Mommas, etc and was coming from the Stooges / MC5 influences. 3/. “Traditional” punk such as Bastard Squad which was rooted in early UK punk and Old School Melbourne punk such as Depression etc. It was fairly political as far as attitudes and lyrics go. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bastard Squad, Bored, Cosmic Psychos, Meanies and Nursery Crimes from previous chapters of the “MPD” were all still going at this stage. (Click on the band name to be linked to the chapter) This band came from Croydon and evolved out of “Public Nuisance”. Aqua Nuggets did a U.S. Skate punk/Minor Threat type sound and put out a 4 track demo in 1991/1992. By 1993 the band tried to go more “Rock”. Accordingly to “Resistant Harmony Fanzine” this band was into U.S. stuff like Rites Of Spring and Victims Family. Three piece band from around 1991/1992. Featured Vinnie form S.T.P. and later of “Cum The Rubber Pig”. This band did Poison Idea type U.S. hardcore and featured Russell H. (Ex Nursery Crimes, Vicious circle etc. etc.) on drums. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some words from Ben Mc on "Butt Ugly" (2006) G'day there A chubby
guy called Pudgie was the vocalist - I think everyone in Melbourne knew him at
the time, because he was at every gig in those days, a real die-hard punk freak,
and a nice guy as I recall. I think they had a guy from the band Bullwinkle
playing guitar too, but I'm not definite on that. These boys were around 92 - 93 before evolving into Bodyjar then Helium then back to Bodyjar, as we know them. This band played in a hardcore style around 1991/1992. These guys were from the Sunshine area, from memory they were a pretty heavy sound eg: Rollins/Suicidal Tendencies type stuff. Great live, toured interstate with No Comply, Aqua Nuggets and Damnation on the “They Came From The East Tour” run by Croydon City Council. Spin of band from the Bastard Squad. Played mainly 1980’s Brit-punk.
Tasmanian band which resided in Melbourne in 1991-1992 and played a Stooges style of music. The band released a 7inch titled "Green Room" in 1991. Members were Alex - guitar, Tony - vocals, Phil - drums and Squiz - bass. Around 1993/1994 and used to play at the Arthouse. Growing Concern- Were a three piece Clash style band who released one demo. Played with Bastard Squad a fair bit. Thanks to Alex "Bastard Squad" for the info Refer to the Damnation notes. This band was around 1989-1993 with Jihad Jack being a member. The band used to play at the Arthouse with Bastard Squad etc and were meant to be “Shit-Hot”. In their set they played “Holiday In Cambodia” and originals such as “Mr Bubble Day Care Centre” and the band started their set with the theme from the “A Team” (80’s Yank TV Show). If anyone has anymore info please write in. Photos, info, tapes etc wanted.
This was a Hobart band that moved to Melbourne and did an excellent post punkish CD which is now hard to get. This was a hardcore band around circa 1994. Who was in it? Write in and tell us.
No Comply Started
with Glen (ex Hyperion) drums, Greg (ex Extremist Pop Extravaganza)
Guitar-Vocals and John (ex Damage Case) Bass -Vocals.
Influenced by Dag Nasty, Descendents to Slayer and they played many shows between Nov 90 and the 94 including Lemonheads supports , Big Day Out 1994 and Superchunk just to name a few. Greg then found out he had tendonitis in his wrist and back and had to stop playing for a considerable length of time. During that time No Comply got Paul in to fill the void. That lasted another year or so then they broke up. Glen and John went on to form "Watercow" with Mark after Gools left to join Oddball around 1996. ![]() Releases: 1991 - A split single "Rap(e)" was released with Freshly Squeezed.
1992 - No Comply Sampler
1993/4 - Buzz EP The band launched the "Buzz" EP at The Hi Fi Bar. Huge in the all ages scene in the early 90's when "The Corner" used to put on massive all ages shows. Regularly played with Nursery Crimes, The Meanies, Hard Ons, Bodyjar, Aqua Nuggets etc. Singer/guitarist Greg went on to record and mix bands such as The Wolves, Bastard Squad (Realpolitik), Bodyjar, OddBall, No Idea, Mach Pelican, The Spazzy's and most Rock 'n' Roll High School bands.
This band came from Geelong and apparently were into the Ramones, Stooges type stuff. They were popular on the live scene. The band released some vinyl: “Slash” EP on the Hippy Knight label (Note: Apparently there was some kind of legal dispute over this release) and the “Lifestyles of the Pissed and Brainless” EP from 1992. To date the band continues to play gigs. Note: The reference to the legal dispute refers to the band thanking C.U.B. on the back sleeve of the "Slash" EP.. The story is that C.U.B. didn't appreciate the company name being put into print without their consent and proceeded with legal action to have the EP withdrawn from sale. Thanks for the info - Clinton Green.
This band released a CD titled “ Southeast of Syracuse”. More info wanted. A surfie band whose singer was singer was on the 6:00pm news after being attacked by a shark! Musically they played a Hard Ons style of punk. All girl band. More info wanted please. Sourpuss were around from 1993 to 1996 and released a 7 inch called "Solvent" in 1995 and a CD titled "Tabouli" in 1996. They split in 1996 when the singer/guitarist Bree Dahl (now known as Brody) left them to go to America to form "The Distillers" (she married Tim from Rancid). The bands line up was Bree/ Brody guitar & vocals, Cobina Crawford bass, Pree Lesley guitar, Suzie Brown drums. One of their drummers also was murdered in the mid 1990s when she was in N.S.W. hitch hiking. There were rumours that it may have been Ivan Milat that was involved in her murder but no one really knows. (Thanks to John Bastard for the info) This band did Minor Threat D.C. type hardcore and released an EP in 1993 called “whine”. The singer ended up in “One Inch Punch”. This band was around circa 1993 and did power pop punk like the Buzzcocks. This was another Eastern Suburbs band and were into stuff like Husker Du, Replacements and Red Kross. Quite a few releases. Tucknot were from Knox. Joel Hibet - Vocals, Craig Pommy Johnson - Lead, Dennis, Brad Dury and Demster sometimes on drums. They were a short lived due to differences amongst the band members and the direction it went. In the end after a few other styles and bands, Dennis and Joel reclused into playing country and blues.... Dennis has since talked about reviving his last true grit rock n roll band "The Loaded Dogs" which includes other members of Rootbeer and eastern suburbs hardcore bands. While Joel resides on the West coast of Vic playing in a punk band called Nutsack, with members off Dust, Tusk, Hoss and The Animal farm. The happy side of the story is that all returned to their roots, dirty low down Aussie rock n roll. God bless the past, an god save us from this Emo shit metal punk, screamo, gothic, California boy band punk rock fused future. Thanks to Bams Mc Drink for his thoughts. Thanks to Jason Bastard for the following info (2006) Two year olds (1991-1994) were an anarchist band that consisted of members from Barricade Books. They're on a comp called 'Riot on Ramsey Street' and
'George mad wog' was on vocals. That's all I know about them. Cheers. Thanks to Andy "Barricade" for the following info (2007) The Two Year Olds also released a demo tape. Bren has digitised a copy and it may be avail online at some point. The song on the 'Riot On Ramsay St' comp is called 'Hole In Your Vision'. The "Riot On Ramsy Street" cd also features Wrongbody, The Scoops, H Block, Richard Watts, Mutiny, Wonderfeel, Self Reliance, Phobia, A.S.V.U., Stand Against, Human Error, Walsh St Cop Killers, Bastard Squad, Da Da Tribe, Multiple Insertions, Bilious Scum, Crux Of Love, Poo Poo and The Million Dollar Man, Trapped In A Box, Vicious Circle and Insyte. cheers, Andy. Basic punk and used to play at the “Richmond Club”. Played some classic Blitz covers to originals. This band was formed in 1994 and kind of took off from where Bastard Squad left off. The band apparently was quite popular in Adelaide and Brisbane. Musically the band played a fast hardcore style and released two albums “Enemies Of Australia” and “Were Still Slaves”. Story is that the bands name got them banned from some venues. Some pubs booked them as “W.S.C.K.” Not a Melbourne band but have had a tie in with our scene. Wollongong based band with a real rock sort of sound similar to Bored and Seminal Rats, bands of that style. Played on the Wollongong leg of the "They Came From The East" Tour. These guys also ran a youth centre in The Gong for young bands to jam, record and perform live. They did a great service to the all ages scene in NSW. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There must have been lots of other punk bands in Melbourne from this era.
