"Sydney Punk Directory"

Concept and original words by Hungry Dave (May 2006/7)

Part 4:  1985 to 1987

By the mid 80’s the Sydney Punk scene was said to be at it’s  most healthiest.   Bands like The Hard Ons,  Mass Appeal changed / influenced the scene away from Traditional / stereo typed U.K. punk and into faster more U.S. influenced stuff.  It would also be fair to say that the Melbourne HC band Vicious Circle influenced the scene with constant touring.

Note:   World War XXIV, Box of fish, Celibate Rifles, Rocks, Happy Hate Me Nots, C.H.A.O.S., Itchy Rat, Joyful Killing, Kelpies, Aberration and the Lime Spiders were all still active at this stage.

Be Kind to Beavers

Be Kind to Beavers were: Kol Dimond, bass; Juliet Dimond, vocals; Alec Smart, guitar; Bill Quarry, drums.

First few gigs were at The Gunnery, a disused former airforce training warehouse on the harbourfront in Wooloomooloo, squatted by anarchists, where Mass Appeal played their first shows.

A U.K. CRASS / Anarchist type band that contributed the track Stop the City to the reactor compilation  "The Not So Lucky Country" LP (1988). They released an 18 track demo titled "Wide-Eyed With Alarm".

(Thanks Alec...)

Beggar’s Court

An American thrash / Garage sounding band that were included on the third Aberrant compilation why march when you can riot?  No other info known.

Black Rose

A Punk band that were around from 1987 to the 1990's. Members were Allan Scott - Vocals, DD Black - Guitar, Rossco - R Guitar, Baz King Smith - Bass, Mick Hallett - Drums.

This is the bands site where you can get some more info and have a listen to a few tracks.

http://myspace.com/growlingfrenzy

Thanks Baz....

Craven Fops

Apparently a non-generic type band that wasn’t into the usual ‘punk’s not dead’ type stuff but a bit more into pushing the boundaries… can some one elaborate?

Eastern Dark

This band did the Johnny & Dee dee single in 1985 (a tribute to the Ramones) and the story is that every gig they played they started off with a Ramones cover.  1986 the band suffered a severe blow when their singer / guitarist  James Darrock died in a car crash on the Hume Highway.

Examplehead

Greg Gardner (voc)  Lionel Gardner (gtr)  Jason Mathseon (bass)  Trence Van stee (drums)

This band released an LP on the Aberrant label in 1986.  No other info known.

Four Thousand Million

A Canberra Anarchist type band that appeared on the cusp of 1984 / ’85 with the release of an excellent cassette called "A Small Dose Of Anticipatory Retaliation". The band played a powerful, melodic style of Hardcore pretty much influenced by U.K. anarcho bands like CRASS, Conflict, Subhumans etc and were well liked in Melbourne.

Review from MRR:

One of the most politically aware and intelligent bands to spring forth in a while.  They aren’t slouches musically either there is a strong U.K./CRASS influence at work, but they are their own band, with songs addressing many local issues as well as international ones. Comes with posters, a zine and other info all of which is comprehensive and inspiring.  A good job.  (TY)

The band came out of The Canberra scene in 1984 which was said to be very Oi! Inspired scene and included bands like UNDER SIEGE, SKIN DISORDER, URBAN CHAOS etc

Growling Frenzy

This band was skin/punk band that started in 1986 and were around until 1987. Barry from Anti-Heirachy was the bass player.

Hard Ons

This famous band appeared in 1985 with the surfin’ on me face e.p.  but the band had it’s roots in THE PLEBS (1982).  Hard ons were different to other sydney punk bands before them.  They mixed Ramones style punk with American Hardcore (Black Flag, Descendants, Poison Idea) aswell as  Hard rock & H.M. influences

Quote from MRR Australian report from 1985:

The Hard Ons, a fast paced (not thrash) pack of berserk and fully intense maniacs with a sort of Ramones  influence. I’ve never seen a band get into playing as much as these 3 guys!!  The Response? Extremely intense thrashing and plenty of it – something I didn’t expect to see hear! They have an e.p. out and it totally kills! (David Ross)

Howling Commandos

Don’t know much about this band except that they released an e.p. in 1985 called 90 days.

Review from MRR:

Great, punchy, high energy ’77 punk.. a vocalist who sounds like a wide awake Iggy Pop and wonderful power punk songs, this is a band to watch for. Good stuff.  (dog)

Impatient Virgins

1985 era band that played not serious ’77 punk with a fun attitude.

Thanks to Jesus Bern from the band for the following info.

The IMPATIENT VIRGINS were and STILL ARE:

Rick Alamango - Drums/Chorus

Sid Bern - Bass/Vox

Gezza Ball - Guitars  (Luke Coleman: aka Haute Coiture replaced Gezza in 86)

Jesus Bern - Guitar/Vox

Biography

With global warming hitting hard & making waves on the world scene, what a farking great idea it is for The Impatient Virgins to re-form after only a 22 year absence from work.

Who would've thought it.

In 1985, the I'V's were igniting the fuse to inevitable success. They conjured up a following of fans that many a band would envy (even today).

BUT, it wasn't meant to be....not back then. They were ahead of their time.

We got to play well over 100 gigs (either as support or headline) all in the space of 2 years.....and all performances were in the Sydney City region (except the A.N.U Bar in Canberra). We never hit Melbourne, although this time, Melbourne is in our sights.

We performed alongside some historical aussie GREATS....... such as:

Hard Ons, Adolphus, Aberration, Rat Cat, Fester Bros, MassAppeal, Southern Fried Kidneys, Dusk Furrow, Spunkbubbles, Dead Sex Fever, The Exserts, The Vultees, Crashcourse, Nuclear Disgrace (Fernando r.i.p .), De Fame, Decontrol, Brain Thieves, The Mothers, The Buttheads, S.M.O.C, The Thumbscrews, The Fat Cuds.....and more.

The band split in 86/87. 2 members went off farting around in Europe to form the celebrated Culmination, MasterBlastoid & silicone.......whilst the other 2 members went off to fart around in bands such as the highly acclaimed...The Mothers, Big Jolly Farters, Nuclear Disgrace, Bore and many more........

Now there's a bit of a chuckle......

ALSO, the sound quality of these recordings are not the best and it really is all we have left......until some of them are re-recorded one of these days...   free to download at

www.download.com/impatientvirgins

So, without further ado......would like to present to you just some of the tunes we did back then in 85/86. Some of these tunes will definitely be played again with the new I.V's reformation.......PLUS......new tunes to boot.

See you soon....

Mass Appeal

Original Line up:    Randy (voc)  Brett Curotta (gtr, ex Bedspreads)   Kevin McCrear (bass)   Darren Gilmour (drums ex- rocks, Climate of fear)

Appeared in 1985 and  were influenced strongly by fast U.S. hardcore ( D.R.I.,  Black  flag, Gang Green, Suicidal tendencies, Reagan youth etc)    Italian HC (Negazionne, Raw Power ). The first release was the nobody likes a thinker 12” (1986)  which was followed by a single the bar of life(1987).  The band was one of the most intense & devastatingly powerful Hardcore bands on the planet (not just Australia) as their 1989 2 Disc set  jazz demonstrates.  Overseas Equivalents would have included  D.R.I.,  SIEGE  & get it away period S.S.D.  Other releases included the mechanic LP  (1992)  and the zesty charismatic personality chamber (1994)  & Nommo Anagonno Lp (1994).

No Class

1986 era band.  They mashed  Straight Punk, Thrash metal & Motorhead influences together.

Painkillers

These guys did a single in 1986 and were describe as a cross between EATER & The CRAMPS. No other info known.

Psychotic Turnbuckles

This band appeared in 1985 and were coming from The Stooges & 60’s ‘nuggetts’ style punk. The band dressed up as wrestlers and were a fun band to go and see play.

Skate Demons from Hell

Mass Appeal spin off band.  No other info known.

Spunkbubbles

This band released a couple of demo's called "Suck Me Off And Gargle It" and "Cherrybombing Your Every Desire & Passion".

Spunkbubbles had a number of vinyl releases during the life of the band.

Stigmata Party

A metal-tinged hardcore band with humorous/satirical lyrics that played around Sydney between 1985 and their last show at The Landsdowne in late 1987.

Personnel: James Renata, guitar; Alec Smart, vocals; Andrew, drums; Matt, bass; and for a short period Darren (ex Massappeal) on second guitar.

Supported the likes of Mass Appeal, Hard-Ons, Hellmenn, plus played a few parties.

Comparable to the Dead Kennedys: songs relied on black humour with live performances involving the hyperactive singer comicly interpreting the songs.

Contributed two tracks to the Sydney compilation '1988 - What's to Celebrate?' (Mummy's Little Punkers, Weaponhead).

(Thanks Alec)

The Moose Effect

Darren (voc)  Evo (gtr)  Jeremy (gtr)  Jane (bass)  Mick (drums)

A 1985 – ’86 era band that played ’77 style punk (influenced by the Damned & Dead Boys among others) no other info known.

The Mothers

Thanks to Rick Alamango for the info.

The Mothers were a  girl/guy punk melodic punk band.

Band members were Fiona Horne - Vocals, Nat - Guitar, Jo - Bass & Rick - Drums.

Their single on Waterfront records "Drives Me Wild" got to No. 4 on the indepenndent charts. The Mothers released an ep called "12 Incher" and appeared on
the compilation Swinging from the trees.

The Mothers toured with The Stupids (USA) in Sydney playing regularly at  the old Trade Union Club and shared the same  manager  as the reformed The Rocks so did a lot of Sydney gigs together. They toured with The Hard Ons and  The Wet Ones in Melbourne and played the circuit with Mass Appeal, The Rocks, Death Mission, I spit on your Gravy, X ,etc.

The Rejected

Basic U.K. ’82 influenced band that appeared in 1985 with a 5 track e.p. entitled first offence.

Toys Went Berserk

This band was influenced by Siouxsie & the banshees (just a bit) and did an album on "Aberrant" called smiler with a knife.

Vultees

These guys appeared 1985 and were well liked  on the Sydney punk scene. Some of the band members had previously been in a band called Animals in Distress a couple of years previous.  Vultees combined straight rock & roll with a melodic punk sound like a cross between Radio Birdman, The Clash & Stiff Little Fingers ( they covered ‘nobody’s hero’)  In an interview in Rise Above fanzine from 1986 the band expressed Disappointment in regards to the Sydney punk scene saying that it was an uncaring, apathetic, pisshead / yob scene.

Thanks to Craig Sinclair for the info.

I was in The Vultees (guitar) for nearly 4 years (from start to finish 1984 thru 1987)

Fom left to right  Scott Deegan - Guitar, John Clinghan - Vox, Peter Adderman - Bass, Craig Sinclair - Guitar, Nasser Sultan - Drums

We put out two singles and a compilation album  track (all on Waterfront) and played well over 100 shows. We split in Melbourne while we were on a tour with the Spunkbubbles. Our last performance was at the Central Club where our  tour manager and the Melbourne promoter were working out the tour proceeds while we were playing and came to blows. The lights and PA were pulled on us and  things got real ugly.  The amps and drums still worked though so we started playing Sonic Reducer and the Spunkbubbles and Vicious Circle came up onstage and joined us.

Out with a bang, not a whimper.

After the Vultees split Scott started a band called Mayday, Nasser went on to join The Rocks whose drummer had just quit and i went on to form Drokk.
