Part 4:  1985 to 1987

By the mid 1980’s it was all happening. The main bands like Depression, Civil Dissident, Permanent Damage and Vicious circle had established themselves both locally and had some overseas recognition. Also “Reactor Records” had put out a number of releases and the scene had started to expand somewhat. A few years before it was a punk/skin scene but by this time had a more diverse mix of people. There were tons of gigs, sometimes two a week and there were plenty of bands playing punk/hardcore stuff. People had sometimes complained that the Aussie punk scene was full of people who wanted to go to where it was “all happening” like England but by this stage anyone could see that Melbourne hardcore bands were better than a lot of big name bands from O/S. Melbourne had a cool, co-operative, communal type punk scene which was kind of similar to the Minor Threat D.C. scene of the early 1980’s a far as positive attitudes go.

Vicious Circle, Civil Dissident, Depression, Permanent Damage, Murder Murder Suicide, I Spit On Your Gravy, The Tribe

All of these bands were still going by this stage. Refer to Chapter 3 of the “MPD” for more details.

 Aardvarks Afterbirth

1985 era band. One track on the Reactor compilation “The Not So Lucky Country”

 Alligator Parade

Pop-punk band which appeared in 1985. Music was similar to “Teenage Kicks” period Undertones. Up-tempo, poppy but hardcore. The band had one track on the “Lucky Country” compilation on Reactor.

Armageddon

Exploited – style punk band. Around 1985, short lived.

Arm The Insane

This band appeared on the scene in 1985 playing an intense, powerful and fast HC style which was typical of Melbourne HC but had their own sound. Quote from MRR scene report from 1986. “A band to be heard and seen to be believed. Live, their vocalists has very good communicative techniques to get their message across effectively”.

The bands first vinyl release was a 4 track EP on the Reactor label called “Virus” (1987).

Other releases: Remember (LP), Split LP with Adelaide band Grunter put out in 1991 (The band had split by this stage).

Arm the Insane’s influences were Melb. HC stuff and English Anarchist bands like Subhumans as well as US HC. The band evolved into “Aversion Therapy” in the early 1990’s.

Balrog

Severe H.C. band that featured Vicki Marks (Ex- End Result), John Feedback (Ex – End Result and Depression) and David Ross (Ex Civil Dissident). Around 1986.

Bastard Squad / Hardcore Revolution

A huge thanks to "John Bastard" for his input and help.

This legendary band appeared on the scene in 1987 playing one of their first gigs at the “Prince Of Wales” – Punk Hardcore Bonanza (featuring about a dozen or more bands) where they were bottom of the bill. Bastard Squad stood out amongst the other bands of the era as they were totally coming from the 1981/82 style Brit-Punk, the likes of which hadn’t been seen in Melbourne for years.

The initial line up featured Daryl-vocals, Matt-guitar, Tony-bass and Spike-drums.

Other members of the band over the years were Jason-vocals, Peter-guitar, Andrew-drums, Ross-drums, Neil-drums, Fraser-bass, John-bass, Alex-drums.

Influences on the band included G.B.H., The Exploited, Discharge, UK Subs, Varukers, One Way System and other 1982 type bands. Although the band sighted UK influences, they were up with current/contemporary H.C. of the time with a quick pace, energy, Aggression etc. which was akin to Melbourne Punk circa 1984. The band claimed to be strictly UK influenced but a listen to their 3 LP’s reveals a U.S. H.C. influence in the guitar frenzy “Rock For Light’, Bad Brains and the 1st LP Suicidal Tendencies comes to mind.

The band built up a dedicated, rough street punk following and by the early 1990’s had pretty much influenced a whole heap of new punk which had more of an anti-system attitude, rather than the skate type bands who might not have really said much about this or that.

The groups first album “Hardcore Revolution” was released in 1990 or so but was actually recorded in Feb 1989. The line up at this time was Jason-Vocals, Matt-Guitar, Tony-Bass and Andrew-Drums.

The band had also contributed two tracks ("Stick it In" and "Police Corruption") to a compilation titled “A Night At The Prince” (which also featured Vicious Circle).

Bastards Squad second LP “Shows Over” came out in 1990. The band members at this time were Jason-Vocals, Matt-Guitar, John-Bass and Neil-Drums.

The band first spilt at the end of 1992 due to Jason being unavailable for an extended period. The group reformed in 2002 when he became available again.

An album was recorded in 1992, and to date, still has not been released. The line up was Jason-Vocals,  John-Bass, Billy-Guitar, and Alex-Drums. In 1998 the bands first two albums were re-released on to one CD with an additional 3 rare tracks which were recorded in the 1992 sessions..

1999 some ex-members got together under the name "Hardcore Revolution" and played some shows for a couple of years and recorded an album titled "Media Lies."  The line up was John-Vocals,  Matt-Guitar, Alex-Guitar, Dan-Bass and Billy-Drums.

Bastard Squad have been gigging again recently with a new Album “Real Politikdue for release in January 2005. The current line up has stayed the same since 2002 is Jason-Vocals, John-Bass, Alex-Guitar and Ben-Drums.

Chaotic Firing Squad

A big thanks to Matt for making contact and giving us the following great info...

A few lads told me about the site - great stuff! Below is some info on Chaotic Firing Squad-Cold Blooded Chaos-The Outfit....

"T'was the summer of 1986-1987 when a punk-kid sporting a green mohawk walked up to Matt Skiba in a club named SoHo and said "G'day, I'm Ed Browne, do you wanna start a punk rock band?". The next day Matt & Ed got together with Rowan Leper and so was born the Chaotic Firing Squad.

That 1st day, jamming in a run-down punk house in Omar St Caulfield, the lads taunted the whinging next door neighbour by way of polluting his swimming pool with faeces smeared underpants. From that day on a pair of underpants smeared in soy-sauce were adorned by these chaos causing punks, often being thrown upon unsuspecting citizens in the street that laughed at us for being punks.

Chaotic Firing Squad wanted a gig badly so they turned up at the Tote one Sunday arvo announcing "we're the band". Three songs later the Manager switched off the PA as parents shielded their children's ears from the lurid songs we played. The lads and their friends we're promptly thrown out and banned from the Tote for life. Chaotic Firing Squad then coincidently did their 1st pub-gig a few weeks later with Bastard Squad at the Duke of Wellington in St Kilda and both bands continued to play gigs together for the next few years.

Chaotic Firing Squad wrote an anthem dedicated to 1970's punk "Back to '76" - opening with the line "Walking Around the streets of Melbourne, there's still people shouting punks not dead..." and developed some 1970's/1980's punk influenced songs with a strong Melbourne theme and punk backbone. When Noah Grosz (lead guitar) and Harry Bandido (drums) joined the band in 1987, the lads couldn't stop writing new songs and played gigs almost every few weeks for the next four years. Having had many run-ins with police harrasment, the lads wrote Pran Pigs and got up on the roof of the ANZ Bank in Chapel St Prahran to unleash their catchy punk-rock songs to an unsuspecting crowd. Unknowingly the lads set-off the bank alarm and watched in horror as carloads of police came in from all directions. Unsatisfied with the lack of publicity from the bank alarm effort the lads somehow managed to secure a gig at Pentridge. Beat Magazine featured a huge "Punks Play Pentridge" feature on the Chaotic Firing Squad whom talked-up the fact we were playing some fun-loving anti-system music, including a version of Sham 69's "Borstal Breakout" changed to "Pentridge Breakout".

The gig at Pentridge ended up seeing all the prisoners being locked-up for the day and an angry prison warder saying to the Chaotic Firing Squad lads that we ought to be very fucking careful because some of the blokes in prison won't forget what we done and they may come looking for us when they get released.

An executive decision was made to change the name of the band - too many skins misunderstood our name was not to do with war camps and our covers of Oi! bands were not a nazi tribute, plus that prison thing, did we want some mad-Bubba-type person with a handlebar moustouche still angry about being locked-up because of some punks turning up at a gig? And so was born Cold Blooded Chaos.

Children Of Sorrow

This band appeared in 1985 under the name of A.I.D.S. Somewhere along the line they changed to Children Of Sorrow. The band had 2 bass players and no guitarist. One bass was distorted the other “clean”. Their sound was fast thrash similar to UK bands like Disorder, Chaos UK and US stuff like Septic Death. Lyrically the band was singing about topics like animal rights, anti vivisection and think for you self type thoughts.

The band had split by 1986. No official recordings or releases.

Cold Blooded Chaos

Chaotic Firing Squad name changed to Cold Blooded Chaos. It was a short-lived name in the scheme of the band and soon after the band became "The Outfit" in late 1988.

Combined Effort

Thanks heaps to Phil Spinks for putting together this info and pics for the site.

Combined Effort was a band that formed up out of the squats in Ivanhoe around 1986. It didn't put out any EP's or LP's (frankly we didn't have money) but we recorded 4 tracks for a demo (1987) and got a small amount of radio play on 3CR and PBS. Played loads of gigs Ballroom, Esplanade, UWU/Squatters Union, various houses/ squats.

The band's name was probably not that memorable "Combined Effort", but reflected the approach to the music and line up.

Although times and dates are quite a bit hazy (won't go into that), we did a support to Vicious Circle, played at a wedding (Max (Mental Health) & Annes), funniest one Frankston Rage without Alcohol (Can you believe that), and our singer got so tanked before the gig, crawled across the stage to get to the mike and security ended the gig by coming on stage and throwing us off!We got asked to come back and do another gig!

Players were (at various times) Shane Runge - Bass, Grant Porteous - Drums, Peter Rice - Guitar, Phil Spinks - Guitar/ Vocals, Sabine Schmidt - Vocals (ex Nobody's Victim), Peter Stronach - Vocals, Des - Vocals (ex A.I.D.S/ Children of Sorrow bassist), Simon Neale - Vocals, Rob Tree - Vocals.

Condemned

This band did an album on reactor titled “Humanoid or Biomechanoid?” which was released in 1986.

Line up: Keith Chatham – Bass/Vocals, Les – Guitar, David Ross-Drums.

Keith was an American that moved to Melbourne in the mid 1980’s initially to play bass for “Death Sentence”. Chatham had previously played with “Condemned to Death” in San Francisco. Les was from Vicious Circle and David Ross was ex- Civil Dissident.

A MRR report from 1986 says the band is like a cross between D.R.I. and Motorhead.

Cosmic Psychos

Well known Garage/Grunge/Yob band that appeared in the mid 1980’s.

End Result

Reformed in 1985 with Murder Murder Suicide, End Result and Vicious Circle personal. No official recordings but a decent live tape is around.

Foot and Mouth

1985 era band. Did a 12 inch EP.

Gas Babies

1984/85 era band. Played 60’s acid punk. Had a track on the “Slab Of Vic” put out on the “Au Go Go” label in the mid 1980’s.

G.A.S.H. (Girls Against Sexual Hype)

Girl band (Anna, Liz and Vera) plus Smeer from Depression on drums that appeared in 1985. First release was a 8 track tape in Nov 1985 followed by an LP in 1986 on Reactor Records. Anna left the band and Liz took on the vocal and guitar duties. Fast Grungy, Metal/Punk style. Other releases included a split album with Depression in the U.S. on Flipside records. And “Positive Change” on Cleopatra in 1988.

Hard Corpuscles

Developed out of Kaotics (1985). Hard Corpuscles did an LP on Reactor – “Decide” 1987.

Human Waste / Extremes

The band formed in 1984 and started gigging in 1985. Originally had Phil MacDougal the Reactor Records boss on vocals, Paul – Guitar, Stan-Bass, Geoff on drums. Music – basic HC punk with meaty/metal tinged sound. The band covered Flippers “sex bomb”. In 1986 Phil and Stan left the band and were replaced by a bass/vocalist Peter. Bt this stage they had changed the name to “Extremes”. The band did an album titled “From Both Sides”.

Check out the Human Waste / Extremes area. Top stuff which was put together by Paul Waste, thanks mate.

Click this - Human Waste / Extremes Page

Internal Haemorrhage

Had a track on the Reactor compilation “The Not So Lucky Country”. No other info known.

Mental Health (Hellth)

This band was around 1986/87 and had a track on the Reactor compilation “The Not So Lucky Country”. Craig is currently in a band in the UK – “Riot Act” (Who are featured in the current Issue 11 of Regression). Matti Harrod went on to play in a number of bands including "Beanflipper", "Mullgrinder" and "Hardcore Pusles".

Never Mind the Gravies, here’s the Grinders

Sex Pistols cover band around 1985 featuring “Corpse Grinders” and “I Spit On Your Gravy” personal.

New Barbarians

Thanks to Jason Bastard for the following info (2006)

New Barbarians (1985-1987) were a UK SUBS cover band that featured Spike (ex. Bastard Squad,  Womnal, Scurge) on drums, Step Nobody (ex. Aadvarks Afterbirth) on guitar , and one of the drummers from Vicious Circle on vocals (forget his name, but he was the one with black spikey hair that toured the US with them, I think).

Nobody’s Victim

Positive type.H.C. band around circa 1986 that had a girl singer. Fast powerful H.C. with things to say.

No Control

This band appeared in 1986 and did S.L.F., PATTTB, Ramones covers plus a heap of originals.

No Idea

N.Z. punk band that moved to Melbourne. Circa 1986 with a slower U.K. sound.

No Remorse

Oi/Skin band around 1986/87. The band had loads of original songs plus a few covers (4 Skins, Last Resort, The Business and Skrewdriver). A fair bit of aggro at the gigs, a bit racist.

Pizza Sluts

Played a lot around 1985.

PFA

Metalish H.C. band, linked to Depression / Hardcore House.

Renegade

    Renegade - Copyright Paul Waste.

Members were: Ron Cartledge - guitar, John Gibson - vocals, John Feedback - guitar, Mick Scott - drums and Steve Scott - bass (Also Hummed Osman
Richard Liddy were in the band during its life)

Thrash/Metal band which appeared on the scene in 1985 at “Punk/Metal” gigs with Depression. Renegade’s sound was similar to Depression musically, a grungy fast, metal with slightly higher vocals in comparison to Depressions snarling Spike. John Feedback a founding member of Depression was on guitar.

The band were featured on the Reactor compilation “The Not So Lucky Country” released in 1988. The band had also released an album "Total Armageddon" in 1987 and a six track demo in 1985. It is believed that the lead singer was a fair dinkum Satanist as he thought Christianity was hypocrisy. The band lasted to around 1989.

Seminal Rats

Appeared in 1985. About the only band of the day to play a more Detroit style of music (Radio Birdman, Stooges, Celibate Rifles etc) than most other Melbourne punk bands. The band released albums in 1987, 1980 and 1990.

S.I.C.

Hugely popular band that got active in 1986. Became a big attraction on the live scene due to their fast Thrash/Metal, fun attitude and energetic shows. The band had come from the metal scene but had gotten into stuff like D.R.I. and S.O.D..

S.I.C. released an album in 1988 “Screaming in Churches”. Review from MRR “Seven ripsaw songs that will easily blast the ears off those people addicted to hyperfast thrash. The speed and song structures share a lot of ground with D.R.I. but incorporate more thrash metal riffs. If you like England’s stenchcore bands then this one’s for you”. The band were still going by 1990 or so.

Sick Things

Reformed in 1985 and 1986 to do a few gigs. Also had the Police/Committed to Suicide 7in released in 1985.

Skippy the Butcher

Had a track on a Stooges tribute album, not much info known.

Slaughterhouse

A supergroup as such featuring ex- Virgins / Sick Things / White Elephants / Bodies and Criminal Youth members doing Detroit type hard rock (Stooges etc). Around 1985 but short lived. Got a gig supporting the “Celibate Rifles”.

Slush Puppies

This band evolved out of Alligator Parade and did similar stuff i.e. Fast,  power-pop sound similar to the Descendents.

S.T.P. (Strength Through Pain)

Positive attitude H.C. band that was around 1986/87. Played a U.S. H.C. style with influences like F.U.’s and Agent Orange. The band featured Vinnie on vocals and the Death Sentence guitarist Gary.

Subversive Pigs

Generic Punk. Around 1985.

Terrorize

Alligator Parade and Vicious Circle spin off band and Included ex "Utter Stench" drummer Mark Z.

The band played fast U.S. H.C. type music.

R.I.P. - "Geoff Sick" - 05 May 2007    Click This to go to the "Geoff Sick Page"

The Creatures

The creatures were formed by Geoff and Colin from the Bootboys around 1987/88. It was more rock and roll but still with a punk flavour.

The Dorks

The Dorks were around in 1987. Mark Z from "Utter Stench" was on Drums.

G'day,
Stumbled across this webpage on the net and was interested to stroll down memory lane. I used to hang out with The Dorks & SIC and wanted to correct/add some info for your Dorks entry. They didn't hail from Geelong, but rather Montmorency in Melbourne's north east. The Geelong connection was probably their Telegraph Hotel gig which i think was their first. They played at the Victoria hotel in Brunswick, also the Prince of Wales and Duke of Edinburgh in St.Kilda. They were a skate punk band who enjoyed skating (of course), partying, B-grade horror movies (which is where the 'Evil Wicked Goats of Hell' demo theme came from), going to gigs, and jamming out riffs.
The first drummer was Adam Moyle who lasted for about a year from '84 to '85. Then Mark Zerafa (Utter Stench & Terrorize) took over those duties bringing his jazz pro skills to the rhythm section. Juston Wornes was on bass and rehearsals took place at The Jam Room in his basement. Rod Turner was the vocalist and wrote most of the lyrics. Dean Clancy was on guitar and there used to be another guitarist in the earlier years called Blowie.
Anyway, hope that sheds a little more light on them.
Cheers,
Steve Davis.

Utter Stench

Skate punk band and released an album.

Members were: Ron - guitar, Borgy - bass, Chris - vocals and Mark Z - drums.

Venom P. Stinger

One of the more interesting bands of this era. Basically V.P.S. had picked up were “Sick Things” had left off when they transformed into “Spew Forth” in 1982. “Sick Things” type punk with “Birthday Party” influence and some jazz drum beats here and there. The band came on the scene in 1985. By 1986 they released their debut LP “Meet My Friend Venom”. Featured amazing stuff like “PCP Crazy”, “Jaws”, and “Flourish Wish”. One of the LP tracks was included on the Reactor compilation “The Not So Lucky Country”.

R.I.P. - "Dugald" (Sick Things/Venom P. Stinger) - October 2004.
