"Sydney Punk Directory"

Concept and original words by Hungry Dave (May 2006/7)

Part 3:  1982 to 1984

This Chapter looks at the bands that were around in the 1982 –84 Sydney Punk scene.

Most or nearly all of the bands from this era were heavily influenced by U.K. punk. This era might be what some people may term as the ‘bad old days’ as the Sydney punk scene around this time had a reputation as a depressing & violent scene due to hard drugs & aggro. Also Sydney had lots of Skins (punk gig attending skins) and it would be fair to say that they had a reputation for violent action at gigs. Anyone who followed Aussie punk closely at the time kind of got the impression that going to a Sydney punk show meant literally taking your life into your own hands as there was a chance that you might get bashed.  On the Positive side Sydney had some GREAT bands.  Also a label Called Aberrant  was started in 1983 by a punk scene regular called Bruce Griffiths and he compiled and released 3 albums worth of Sydney punk bands flowers from the dustbin (1983),  Not so Humdrum (1984), Why March when you can Riot ? (1985)    He also did a fanzine trousers in action which featured local bands and ran from 1982-1986.

Some Memories from Steve....Thanks for sharing them.

Absolutely love the website mate brings back so many memories and from those days I'm amazed the brain cells lasted to remember.

Idetity-X from Sydney I saw them and knew the singer Rachel, heavy Vice Squad influence. Aberration had Dragan on guitar and they were shit hot. CHAOS, yup I knew Colin Chaos well and lived at the Pirates Cove on Cleveland St for a while myself, good band especially when they played private parties. So many bands I've seen on your list but cant fully remember. Seen Decontrol, Execution Masks, Crash Course - singer Jimmy Beard good band. Seen Climate of Fear, Feedtime, Government Downfall, Positive Hatred, Progression Cult- they were fantastic out the back of the old Civic Hotel. The Real Fucking Idiots, saw them and cant even remember where it was but yeah weird band with some chicks with mohawks playing sax and shit and as I remember they were shit I think. Vigil-Anti were great with Andy on vocals, the low point there came when they played at a skinhead pub I frequented and the band got turned over by the skins who were becoming increasingly anti punk. I think they just about gave it away after that. A shame cos they were good. A lot of the trouble making fuckwit skins were from NZ at that time and caused all kinds of shit between the punks and skins  who had up until then got on. Yup and world war 24 poor old Clyde on bass OD'd which was fucking sad cos I used to work with him as well.

Anyway cheers

Steve

Aberration

This band played in a Rose Tattoo meets punk style and were around 1983 – 86.  No other info known.   Can some one elaborate?

Anti-Heirarchy

Thanks to Barry King -Smith for this history.

Started “life” in mid 1981 in the western suburb of Mt Druitt under the name “Espionage” featuring Brett “Brat Hoax” Sonter on vocals, Chris “Chip” Wardale on Bass, Paul “Owie” O’Brien on Guitar and Tony Cardinal on drums.

Brett was killed on Christmas Day 1981 in the early hours on Elizabeth street. After a brief period of mourning the remaining members recruited Dean on vocals (whom had filled in as vocalist for Cambridge Rapists when Mark was in England) and the name was changed to Anti-Hierachy.

By the end of 1982 Anti-Hierachy had “split to become “What?!!” which featured Tony, Dean & Owie along with “Real Fucking Idiots” alumni Amanda “Minda” Idiot (Co-Vocals) & Tom (Bass)(Tom also did the drums for Feedtime from late 1983) . This short lived band folded after Tony left to join Soggy Porridge (remnants of The Kelpies) Dean & Owie joined back up with Chip (who had been in “Des & The Dingbats” with other “Real Fucking Idiots” alumni Adrian (Sax) & Yvette (Drums)) & Yvette to form “Yokta Da Voya Mokta” in early 1984. This band lasted until mid 1984 before Dean & Owie joined forces with “Happy Hate Me Nots” Neil Toddie (Drums) (also ex of London Noise/Hilton Bombers/Cambridge Rapists) & Ken (Bass) (Ex of No God, No Dog/Climate of Fear) to form “Itchy Rat”.

Anti-Hierachy never made it to the studio as such but was featured on local fanzine cassette compilation “Hard Days Rut” recorded live at The Civic Hotel 1982.

Bedspreads

Mid tempo U.K. style band that was around circa ‘84-85 and contributed 2 tracks  Judge Dread & Face the Facts to the Why march ?comp.  The Singer Anthony was ex Progression Cult,  and the Guitarist Brett Curotta went onto Mass Appeal fame.

Berserk

Get in contact with Regression if you know anything about this band.

Box Of Fish

Post punk-ish band that got going in 1982. Released a single in 1983 (sex cat killer) contributed 2 tracks to the flowers from the dustbin LP & in 1985 did an ep called what are man’s fears ?  The band was often compared to The Birthday Party & Bauhaus.

Celibate Rifles

The Rifles started around ‘79-80 and were influenced by Radio Birdman & the Saints.  The first record was a 4 track e.p. in 1982 called But Jacques the fish ?    Other early releases included Siderroxylon Lp (1983)   & Celibate Rifles LP (1984).

Quote from MRR article by Jello Biafra:

Celibate Rifles come from a coastal suburb and completely take the piss out of the relaxed Australian mentality.  Their sound is very Radio birdman & Velvet underground influenced, which they readily admit to, but unlike the macho pretensions of many of those bands, their songs are distinctly anti-macho, anti-war, and their real forte is very vicious social satire aimed at their own scene, and complacent lifestyles. Also They are the only band of the hard-edged rock & roll scene who mix well with the punks and are respected by the punk element as well.’

Certain Death

1983-84 band that played in a fast Hardcore style (influenced by Discharge)  More info wanted.

C.H.A.O.S.

This band developed out of Queen Anne’s Revenge who had been in action since early ’79. C.H.A.O.S. (stood for Cannabis, Hashish & Over proof spirits) released  the excellent lucky country e.p. in 1985, which is one of the best Aussie punk records of the 80’s by far.  More info wanted on C.h.a.o.s.

Climate Of Fear

Andy Wilson (voc)  Bob Burke (gtr)  Ken (bass / voc)   Keith Boots (drums)

Formed in Sept 1983 this band was one of the few or about the only band to do 80’s American Style Hardcore (Influenced mainly the West coast bands such as T.S.O.L., Code of honour,  Channel 3  etc) Active 1983-84. Don’t know of any releases, more info wanted.

Crash Course

1984/85 era band.  The band had 2 tracks ("Stop The Car" and "Emotional Blackmail") on the excellent "Men At Risk" compilation tape (around 1982).

D.a.’s

This band was around circa 1983 and did a flexi single (death city, Sonic Reducer) with 48 crash fanzine.    No other info known.

Decontrol

1983-1985 era band that played in a fast U.K. thrash style (ie:  Discharge, Disorder, Chaos U.K.)  No other info known.

Espionage

This band started in mid 1981 and evolved into Anti-Hierachy.

Execution Masks

A great 1983-84 era band that played in a punk/oi style similar to Cockney Rejects, Sex Pistols, A.N.W.L. etc   More info wanted.

Exserts

These guys got going in 1981 influenced strongly by English ’77 punk such as The Clash, Stranglers, Buzzcocks & especially by the Jam.  They even looked a bit like the Jam (kind of Mod-ish punk)  but their sound was a lot more garage-y than Paul Weller & Co.  The band contributed 3 tracks to the Second aberrant compilation not so humdrum and 1986 a full length album came out but the band had split by this stage.

Feedtime

These guys had been around for years and never said that they were punk but got the punk tag anyway.  The band sited influences such as Rose tattoo, X & early Cajun music as influences.

The band got going in 1979 playing music like P.I.L.’s 1st Album but at the same time they hadn’t heard of them.  The band did a number of releases on the Aberrant label from 1985 onwards.

Review of the feedtime album from MRR:

Seems to be recorded somewhere between 33 & 45 RPM cuz it seems plausible at both speeds.  This is driving, bass heavy guitar noise stuff, sometimes quietly mad and other times blatantly insane.  Grunge with conscious intent but really well executed.  (TY)

Funhouse

Rip Savage (voc)   Kelly Hewson (gtr)  Phil  Mctaggert (bass)  Paul Loughead(drums)

The origins of this band go back to Adelaide 1981 when they began as Gun Control who were a solid late 70’s style punk band (influenced by Clash, Pistols, Damned, Ruts, U.K. subs). While in Adelaide they built up a good following (they had a love / hate relationship with their fans apparently) Did some recordings ( a 4 track demo ), but by 1983 the band had started to get itchy feet and by 1984 had planted themselves in the Sydney Punk scene.  Also it’s said that the band had got a bit jaded with the punk scene and had gotten more into a ‘Detroit’ hard rock style ie:  The Stooges, MC5 etc   The band released  a single in 1984. (Conspicuous consumption / Retaliation)

Review from MRR:

Funhouse specialise in mid-speed rock compositions with lead solos and angry lyrical concerns. Retaliation has a tense, riff laden approach that makes fro powerful music, but rumour has it the these guys are now much better than these early 1983 recordings indicate.  A promising band.  (ss)

The band lasted up until 1985 or so(the band split up as all their gear was stolen) …  The lead singer Rip Joined MUSHROOM PLANET who did an e.p. in 1985,  The drummer Paul Loughead joined the Celibate  rifles, the rest of them had another band called DRASTIC PLEASURES,  & Kelly Hewson went on to play guitar in other punk / hardcore bands such as ANTI REASON, ORDER OF DECAY & GLENN & THE PEANUT BUTTER MEN.

Government Downfall

Apparently a fast hardcore band around 1982-83…  more info wanted.

Happy Hate Me Nots

This band got going in mid 1983 by ex Positive hatred members.  The band played in a very melodic, bright power pop style which drew insipiartion from the Jam, Buzzcocks & the Undertones. Releases included 2 tracks on the Not so Humdrum Lp,  A single won’t do any good  in 1985, and an album scrap in 1988.

Heresy

Around 1984-85  .. No other info known.  Get in contact with Regression if you can add to this.

Identity X

1982 Era band…   Became Wrong Kind Of Stonage.

Itchy Rat

This band was a great Aussie punk sounding band that contributed 3 shit hot tracks to the Not so Humdrum compilation (jack junk, homely situation & the sky is falling) swell as doing a single in 1986 called save the labels (for tins of beans) More info wanted on Itchy rat.

Joyful Killing

This band was around circa 1984 – 86  and played in a total Sex Pistols style (apparently).

The band did some recording but they never saw the light of day.

Sydney Scene report from 1985 issue of MRR:

At a Joyful Killing gig there was lots of skinheads who must check out “wrestlemania” on T.V.! Lots of simplexes, body slams & kicking each other.  Forget it fellas King Kong Bundy rules all!  (David Ross)

Lime Spiders

These guys weren’t part of the ‘normal’ punk scene but were coming more from The stooges and 60’s ‘acid’  punk. The band’s classics include  Slave girl & 25th hour  plus lots of others. A very rockin’ band.

Quote by Jello Biafra from MRR:

The most extreme band of it’s type I’ve ever heard as far as taking 60’s punk and making it more abrasive and annoying in anyway possible.

Mega Heroes

1983 era band.  No info known.. can someone fill us in ?

Miss Australia

1982 era band..  no info

Positive Hatred

Mark Creus (voc)  Paul Berwick (gtr, voc)  Julian Creus (bass)  Neil Toddie (drums)

This band was heavily influenced by ’77 English punk such as The Clash, Generation X and so forth.  The band was formed in August 1981, played their first gig in October ’81,  played final Show June 1983 (did 27 shows all up).  However by August ’83 Guitarist Paul & Drummer Neil had formed the Happy hate me nots.   Recorded out put:  3 tracks on the flowers from the dustbin LP.    & A full-length album which came out in 1986.

Progression Cult

Anthony (voc)   Russell (gtr)  Nick (bass)   Andrew (drums)

One of the more Full on Punk bands to come out of Sydney during the early 80’s.   Progression cult played a fast hardcore punk style similar to U.K. bands like Partisans, Disorder, Peter & the test tube babies and so forth, mixed with a bit of early P.I.L. Also the band was involved with political subversion & Anarchy.  The band were also one of the few newer 80’s punk bands to get a record out, a 5 track e.p. entitled new blood containing some rippers like subordinate, your religion & Death of innocence.

The e.p. came out in 1982 and was badly recorded, but great.   The band was active up until the February 1984, but after that Progression Cult was defunct.

Ragadoll

This band was around circa 1983 and claimed to be influenced by The Sex Pistols & the Gun Club, drugs &  the rolling stones (bluesy punk)  No Other info known.

Real Fucking Idiots

Were they really ?  Write in and tell us…

Soggy Porridge

A post punk-ish CURE sounding band that did a 12” ep in 1983.

These Cars Collide

Not sure if this band was ‘punk’ or not but they played with punk bands and were into English post punk like Gang of Four.

Undertakers

This band might have had something to do with the Kelpies.  Undertakers put out a single in 1984  Danger in my mind / true to me

Review from MRR:

A Foot tapping pop punk release from Australia that reminds me of the halcyon days of British hard pop (1979-80)…  good melodies, loud guitars “ (JB)

Vigil-Anti

Another one of Sydney’s more full on 80’s punk bands.  This band did the song Darlinghurst Police and were  active between 1982-84 being solidly influenced by U.K. punk like Blitz , the Partisans & Stiff little fingers.

Vellocette

John Clements (voc)  Paul Spooner (gtr)  Nick jugurtis (bass)  Charlie Falzon (drums).

This band was kick started in December 1981 out of the remnants of REJEX (the previous band of John, Nick & Charle).   The band died December 1982.  The band had a post punk sound and contributed 2 tracks woe & black cloud to the flowers  from the dustbin  LP.

What ?!?

This band only ever did one gig in December 1982. But in 1983 recorded 3 tracks for the flowers in the dustbin LP.  Some of the band members had previously played in Anti Heirachy, Real Fucking idiots, Von Zippers, Purple Vulture Shit & the Stinkpots.

World War XXIV

Mark Nowane (voc) Chuck (lead gtr) Bob Burke ( gtr)   Clyde Franklin (bass)

Rob Canciullo (drums)

One of the best punk bands to come out of Sydney ( or Australia) in the early 80’s. World war XXIV were formed in late 1981 they were getting into fast energetic punk music, they decided to have a jam and make a bit of noise.  First gig was at the Civic Hotel, March 1982. 1983 the band did the Excellent Azaria / Why Bother single which is one othe best Aussie punk records of the 80’s.  The band played a fast style of punk that combined Dead Kennedys type Hardcore,  Peter & the test tube babies style Oi! And tough Radio Birdman style riffing which made for a powerfull non generic sound. (The band also did some Dead kennedys and Test tube babies covers in their set as well as Originals.)  1986 The band released their debut shit hot album (self titled) but by this stage the line up had changed:

Mark (voc)   Chuck  (gtr)  Portly (bass)  Rob  (Drums).  With this line up they did shit loads more gigs and even a T.V. appearance.

Mid 90’s the band was still active and they released their second album No Luck.

A fun time yobbo punk band that didn’t take themselves too seriously.

World War XXIV Shot A - Mark "Bird" Nowane

Discography:

World War XXIV Shot B

Wrong Kind Of StoneAge

This band was featured on The Not So Humdrum Compilation and also did an e.p. in 1984 called flying low to Batavia

Jello Biafra quote from MRR:

One of the best morbid-ambient post punk bands I’ve ever seen or heard… sound like WILD WOMEN OF BORNEO at times or the more esoteric side of SAVAGE REPUPLIC.

X

Still active at this stage and did the  Mother / Halfway round the world single (1983)
