"Sydney Punk Directory"

Concept and words by Hungry Dave (May 2006/7)

Part 2:  1979 to 1981

This Chapter deals with bands that were around after the Radio Birdman ‘Yeah hup’ era  and before the more ‘Punk & Disorderly’ 1982-84 scene.

________________________________________

One of the fanzines that started in 1981 at the time was "Hard Days Rut".

It was run by “Pommy” Dave Distortion whom was fresh off the boat from Birmingham and still had mates back in the motherland that would mail him info on the bands in Birmingham and local surrounds. This gave us info from a grass roots level rather than Sounds or NME which was the other alternatives. Dave also wrote about the local scene which was becoming healthier at the time.

HDR lasted six issues (1981) and halted due to lack of interest/support from the Sydney Scene. A couple of contributors to HDR started “Animals In The Press” after HDR was obsolete. Dave continued putting out “Viewzines” under the name “Euthal Dreams” and started at Number Seven where HDR left off. Euthal Dreams was more political focused and did not focus on the bands as such.

(Thanks heaps for the info Baz...)

Bedhogs

What was this band all about ?  Write to Regression & tell us

British Jets

This band put out a 7” single in 1981. pop punk with Ozzy Osborne style vocals.

Invader

This band put out a single in 1981   Don’t blame me / Anastasia  on the Machine gun rock label.

Johnny Demon & the Devils

A legendary band that put out the you make me spew / shut your mouth single in 1980. The band came from the Western Suburbs of Sydney and were said to be the punk AC/DC.  The Onyas (Qld)  did a cover of You make me spew and released it as a single in the mid 90’s.  More info wanted …

The Kelpies

James Gelding (voc)  Mark Easton  (gtr)   Brian Conolly (gtr)   Con Murphy (bass)  Ashley Thomson  (drums)

Legendary band that was formed in march 1981.  All the band members had been around the punk scene for years and had previously played with the likes of Blackrunner, Bedhogs, Suicide squad, Vic Vomit & the varicose veins, Aftermath & Mayhem.  The band managed to get a good following, release a single etc but by August 1982 the band had split up.  Apparently one of the reasons why they split was they couldn’t get gigs as their following liked to turn up to their shows and bash heads, trash venues etc which lead to them being banned. The band did  some recordings during ‘81-82 and 3 tracks were released on the flowers from the dustbin album (1983)  plus a whole album’s worth of material was released in 1986 on an album called the dungeon tapes.    They admitted to like Oz-rock bands like The Angels, Rose Tattoo, AC/DC as well as Punk, and the band played a Rock-ish style.

Local Product

This band played in a solid style that drew on Rose tattoo, X and late 70’s punk. The band contributed 3 great tracks (die hard, pig boys, magenta) to the third aberrant compilation why march when you can riot ?

New Race

Rob Younger (voc)  Deniz Tek (Gtr)  Ron Asheton(gtr)  Warwick Gilbert (bass)  Dennis Thomson (Drums)

This band was around in 1981, a super group made up of 3 Birdmen, 1 ex Stooge and 1 MC5. The band toured Australia in 1981 doing Radio Birdman, Stooges, MC5, Visitors, Destroy all Monsters tunes plus one original ‘hail Colombia’.  A live album came out in 1982 called the first & the last.

Queen Anne’s Revenge

Kevin Thomas (Voc)   Colin Vaughan (gtr)  Steven Borg (Bass)  Dave Briggs (drums)

This band was formed as KAOS in 1979, but after numerous line ages they became Queen Anne’s Revenge in mid 1981. (also a different vocalist by this stage by the name of Mark Crasti).  This line up was active in 1981, 82 and 83 but by the start of 1984 the band had changed vocalists back to Kevin Thomas and the band reverted to the old name of C.H.A.O.S. (See chapter 3 for me details)

Queen Anne’s Revenge contributed 3 tracks  piracy, 25 hour hoods and cathode ray gun to the first aberrant compilation flowers from the dustbin (1983).

Suicide Squad

This band did the excellent I hate school / New Kids army single (1980) and contributed some tracks to the Not So Humdrum Lp  The single featured a chic on vocals, Annie Barret and the guitarist was Mark Easton who played in lots of bands around this period.  The tracks on Not so humdrum has a bloke singing.  The band was into solid English ’77 punk like the Pistols,  X-Ray-spex & so forth.

Vic Vomit & the Varicose Veins

This delicately named ensemble was another Mark Easton (guitarist)  write to Regression if you have more info on this band & Suicide squad etc

XL Capris

This band did a  single in 1980:  My City of Sydney / Dead Budgies.   The word is that they were a loony band and played in a punk / new wave style.
